Justin Hayward discusses when he realized music was the right fit for him

I loved music as far back as my memory goes. I liked the music on the radio, I was particularly touched by Johnny Ray's voice when I was little, and I liked the Hymns in 'Hymns Ancient and Modern. We sang them in Church, and in school assembly, which is politically incorrect in any UK school nowadays. I got a Ukulele when I was 8 and a guitar when I was 10 - I knew I could play it, and played it until my fingers were beyond painful! I helped form a little group when I was 11 and loved it. By the time I was 13 I was earning enough to pay for a better guitar and I did a summer season in Lyme Regis with a repertory company which sealed it - I was going to be a musician. But the fact was that the alternatives in Swindon weren't that appealing either. There were jobs - but they weren't for me. To me being a musician isn't a job - it's a joy (whith lots of hard work thrown in!) (and fun).
